Community Profile
Bridgewater Township is a township in Somerset County, New Jersey. It is a relatively large, mostly affluent suburban township. The 32-square mile community borders 11 other municipalities. Tradition holds that it was at the Middlebrook encampment that the first official flag of the United States was unfurled. By special order of Congress, a Thirteen Star Flag is flown 24 hours a day at the Washington Camp Ground, part of the former Middlebrook encampment, in Bridgewater. The township’s population began to grow when residents of larger cities such as Plainfield and Newark started to migrate into Bridgewater. Subsequently, Bridgewater started to receive an influx of residents who worked in the strong pharmaceutical, telecommunications and financial industries in Bridgewater and the Raritan Valley. More recently, there has also been growth as Bridgewater has become more popular with New York City commuters who use Bridgewater Station on New Jersey Transit's Raritan Valley Line or Interstate 78 East to commute to New York City. Bridgewater is a diverse and thriving township with a mix of both rural and suburban life. The township is home to 3600 acres of public and private parks and recreation opportunities. Bridgewater is a prime ground for many new and large businesses, including Sanofi-Aventis, Johnson & Johnson, MetLife, and Phillips-Van Heusen. Bridgewater boasts Blue Ribbon schools, job opportunities in national and international pharmaceutical and biotechnology firms, and is home to the championship winning Somerset Patriots and Bridgewater Commons Mall, as well as numerous other shopping opportunities and hotels. Bridgewater has progressed rapidly from its rural roots, and is poised for more growth in the future.
