Company Profile
In 1936, a group of ten coffee farmers in Kealakekua drew up a charter to form Kona Farmers Community Federal Credit Union. They were later known as Kona Community Federal Credit Union when they expanded in 1939. In 1955, they were the largest federal credit union in the former territory of Hawaii and also the first to erect their own building. The credit union’s field of membership increased substantially in 1981 when Kohala Federal Credit Union merged with them. In 1991, the credit union changed their name to Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union (HCFCU) to better represent the geographic scope of their membership. In 2000, HCFCU’s field of membership opened up to the entire island of Hawaii as Paauhau Federal Credit Union merged with them. With $320 million in assets, HCFCU now serves its 36,000 members with offices in Kealakekua, Kailua-Kona, Kapaau, Honokaa and Kaloko. Through their shared branching locations on other islands, as well as their Co-Op Network, members can access these branches even when they are not physically on the Island of Hawaii. HCFCU prides itself with their friendly, helpful staff that provides individualized service and attention to detail. Members experience the privileges of being an owner, such as lower loan rates, higher dividend rates and lower fees than most other financial institutions, not to mention perks including discounts and access to numerous money-saving services. The credit union is recognized for its heritage among its employees, members and the communities it serves.
Community Profile
Kailua is a census-designated place in Hawaii County, Hawaii, on the North Kona District of the Island of Hawaii. It is the center of commerce and of the tourist industry on West Hawaii. Its post office is designated Kailua-Kona to differentiate it from the larger Kailua located on windward Oahu, although it is sometimes referred to as "Kona" in everyday speech. Kailua is located along the shoreline of Kailua Bay and up the southern slope of Hualālai volcano. Kona coffee is the variety of Coffee Arabica cultivated on the slopes of Mount Hualālai and Mauna Loa in the North and South Kona Districts. Ali'i Drive is the oceanfront main thoroughfare, weaving from Kailua Pier all the way south to Keauhou Bay. It is a splendid mix of curio stores, restaurants, sidewalk cafes, art galleries, and souvenir stands - all of these on the picturesque Kona coast, where you will find the most remarkable sunsets in the backdrop of azure-blue waters. Kailua Pier is the starting and finishing point for the world-famous Ironman Triathlon World Championship and the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament. North of the pier is the former royal compound of King Kamehameha and Ahu’ena Heiau. Nearby is Hulihe’e Palace, another royal residence used by members of the Hawaiian royal family until 1914. Parks include La’aloa Bay (also known as Magic Sands or White Sands Beach) and Kahalu’u Bay. Although abuzz with visitors, cruise passengers, and tourists from all over the world, Kailua-Kona is known for its small town feeling everyone enjoys.
